Snow Strategies - Clearing Pathways to Your Success

Child Development Screening Initiative

The Child Development Screening Initiative is a three-year endeavor by the Florida Developmental Disabilities Council (FDDC) to convene stakeholders and develop a comprehensive statewide system of developmental screenings for children ages birth to five. FDDC has contracted with Snow Strategies Inc. to carry out the goals of Year 1.

The Initiative will include researching and developing recommendations, criteria and implementation strategies for a coordinated system of screenings that encompass all domains of development and establishes a process of referrals for follow-up assessments and services. The project builds upon the strategic plan of the Florida Cabinet for Children and Youth's goals of establishing mechanisms and strategies to support families in providing for the optimal growth and development of their children and youth.

The goals of Year 1 include:

  • researching efforts in other states with higher screening rates than Florida;
  • researching Florida's system of developmental screenings;
  • identifying screening and assessment tools used in Florida;
  • convening a statewide Task Force to review the findings and make recommendations for a comprehensive system; and
  • developing a standard menu of screening and assessment tools for use in Florida.

The first meeting of the Task Force was October. 26, 2011 in Tallahassee.
The second meeting of the Task Force was January 9, 2012 via Webinar.
The third meeting of the Task Force was March 23, 2012 in Tallahassee.
